School Attendance

cat raise handSchool attendance is important to the academic success of our students. We recognize that illnesses, appointments and unexpected emergencies arise. If your child is absent from school, please send a note the day he or she returns. If tardy, you may bring the doctor’s note if there is one or tell the receptionist the reason your child is late. Three unexcused tardies count as one unexcused absence, for promotion and retention purposes only. Below is the list of excused absences as approved by Wayne County Public Schools:

1.     Personal illness or injury that makes the student physically unable to attend school

2.     Isolation ordered by the State Board of Health

3.     Death in the immediate family

4.     Medical or dental appointment

5.     Participation under subpoena as a witness in a court proceeding

6.     Observance of an event required or suggested by the religion of the student or the student’s parent(s) with prior approval by the principal

7.     Participation in a valid educational opportunity, such as travel or service as a Legislative or Governor’s page, with prior approval by the principal

8.     Pregnancy and related conditions or parenting, when medically necessary

9.     Parental military deployment activities

Extended illnesses generally require a statement from a physician
